After a lengthy period of tutoring, he served sixteen years under an accomplished Patrician military tribune, playing a part in the later stages of uniting Italia proper. At age 34, a year after releasing his own position as a tribune, he ran for senate. After a heated campaign, he was elected to quaestor, kick-starting his political career. For the next decade and a half, Marcus would play a vital role in Senate politics, while simultaneously building his family's fortune after inheriting 2,100,000 sesterces from his father. This would be done through expanding his family's control over the grain market to a near monopolistic level, while entering into the slaving trade as well as precious metals from Hispania. To date, he retains a walled palatial estate north of Rome, retained by a private army of 300 Hastati and Cisalpine cavalry, but typically resides in his large villa on the Aventine Hill with his wife, son, and two daughters.
